Fall 2023 Internship with Cubic Care Family Medicine
At Cubic Care Family Medicine, I have an opportunity to work alongside a physician on a quality improvement project. Using the “Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycle” to address blood pressure control in hypertensive patients. The approach involved effective communication, careful planning, collecting the right data from the EMR system, and targeted intervention for patients with uncontrolled blood pressure.
I was responsible for gathering data and carrying out the intervention, which included communicating with patients and encouraging them to keep a low-salt diet and active lifestyle. As a result, there was a notable reduction in uncontrolled blood pressure cases, surpassing the 90% target by 4%. Patients also gave positive feedback, highlighting increased awareness and satisfaction. Looking ahead, the successful intervention will be integrated into clinic operations, with a proactive approach planned for the upcoming year that will eliminate white coat syndrome and provide better structure when treating patients.
This experience has improved my critical thinking and project management skills and showcased the importance of creativity while maintaining HIPPA compliance. I am grateful for the experience and the guidance and encouragement provided by my supervisor, who is also the physician I collaborated with throughout this impactful project.
