OSIM area faculty conduct cutting–edge research in a variety of diverse areas.
Faculty research in the Organizations, Strategy, and International Management (OSIM) area has been published in leading journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, American Journal of Sociology, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Management Science, Marketing Science, MIS Quarterly, Organization Science, Personnel Psychology, and Strategic Management Journal, significantly contributing to the school’s reputation for conducting cutting-edge research. According to Texa A&M/University of Georgia rankings of management department research productivity, OSIM has been ranked as 25th department in terms of research productivity and 19th in terms of publication adjusted for faculty size in 2021.

Books
Textbooks authored by Jindal School of Management leading faculty are used and studied around the world. Dr. Greg Dess’ Strategic Management (co-authored with T. Lumpkin, M. Eisner, and G. McNamara) is widely used throughout the world, with translations in Chinese, Portuguese, and Serbian, as well as adaptations in Canada and Europe. Dr. Seung-Hyun Lee will join the author team for the 9th edition.
As global market leaders, Dr. Mike Peng’s Global Strategy, Global Business, and GLOBAL are used in over 30 countries. They have been translated into Chinese, Portuguese, and Spanish. A European adaptation (International Business, coauthored with K. Meyer) has been launched.
As a leading scholar in applying philosophical analysis to solving methodological problems, Dr. Eric Tsang published The Philosophy of Management Research in 2017. The book provides a systematic and comprehensive treatment of the subject, and may serve as a textbook for seminars on research methodology at the master’s and PhD levels.
Faculty Honors and Awards
- In August 2023, Hyesook Chung received Ralph Alexander Best Dissertation Award from Human Resources division at Academy of Management for the best doctoral dissertation completed in the last two years in Boston, MA.
- In October 2023, Hyesook Chung received a Best Paper Award for her paper entitled “Managerial Change and Unit Performance” from Strategic Human Capital interest group at Strategic Management Society, Toronto, Canada.
- In October 2020, Riki Takeuchi was elected fellow in American Psychological Association.
- In August 2018, M. Peng was reported by a study in Scientometrics as having the second largest number of highly cited papers in economics and business during 2004-2015 in the world (and UT Dallas was reported as the 39th most influential university in these fields).
- In June 2018, E. Tsang was voted to join the Fellows of the Academy of International Business.
- In April 2018, S. S. Levine was named editor for a special issue of Organization Science on Experiments for Organizational Theory.
- In April 2018, R. Takeuchi was voted to join the Fellows of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
- In March 2018, S. S. Levine was recognized by the Social Science Research Network for reaching the top 10% of authors by all-time downloads.
- In December 2017, M. Peng was found to be the top 18 most prolific contributor in the entire 46-year history of the Journal of International Business Studies.
- In September 2017, O. Richard was quoted in the Dallas Morning News.
- In August 2017, D. Park received an Award for Outstanding Service to the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal Editorial Board.

- In March 2017, S. S. Levine was invited to present his diversity research to a presidential forum of the American Physical Society, an association of physicists in academia, national laboratories, and industry.

- In August 2016, O. Richard received the Spirit Circle Award for his mentoring of Ph.D. Project students.

- In February 2016, D. Ford received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Alzheimer’s Disease Center Memory Research Unit, UT Southwestern Medical Center.

- In December 2015, M. Peng, E. Tsang, J. Lin, and J. Xia were reported by a study in the Asia Pacific Journal of Management to be the most prolific strategy authors of Chinese descent in this leading journal on Asia Pacific management research.
- In October 2015, D. Ford received the Quarter Century Membership Award from the Society of International Business Fellows at their Annual Summit in Santa Fe, NM.
- In August 2015, M. Peng was quoted by the U.S. News and World Report.
- In August 2015, E. Tsang won the Academy of Management Review Decade Award.
- In August 2015, E. Tsang received the Best Senior Editor Award from Management and Organization Review.
- In June 2015, M. Peng won the Journal of International Business Studies Decade Award.
- In May 2015, M. Watson received the President’s Teaching Excellence Award.
- In April 2015, D. Ford received the Educator of the Year Award from the National Forum for Black Public Administrators at their annual conference in Tampa, FL.

- In January 2015, S. Lee was voted to assume the position of the Vice President of the Asia Academy of Management.
- In October 2014, M. Peng was listed in The Most Influential Scientific Minds by Thomson Reuters, which “tracked the authors who published numerous articles ranking among the top 1% of the most cited in their respective fields” (award letter). In the field of Economics and Business, only a total of 95 scholars worldwide have received this distinction.
- In August 2014, M. Peng won the Academy of Management Perspectives Best Impact Award.
- In December 2013, D. Ford received a Senate of the State of Texas Proclamation for PhD Project Hall of Fame Induction.
- In November 2013, D. Ford was inducted into the PhD Project Hall of Fame.
- In December 2012, the Asia Pacific Journal of Management named its Best Paper Award the Mike Peng Best Paper Award, and presented its first winners in Seoul, Korea, at the Asia Academy of Management Conference.
- In August 2012, D. Ford received the PhD Project Management Doctoral Students Association Service Recognition Award for service as Senior Faculty Advisor.
- In July 2012, M. Peng was voted to join the Fellows of the Academy of International Business.
- In March 2012, O. Richard won the Faculty Diversity Award from the UT Dallas Office of Diversity and Community Engagement.
- In October 2011, within one week of the naming of our school as the Jindal School of Management, M. Peng was appointed as the first ever Jindal Chair.
- In September 2011, M. Peng delivered a freshmen enrichment lecture, “Global Business @ UT Dallas,” as a part of the new university initiative to enrich the freshman experience and showcase the research done here. (The lead speaker of the series was Dr. David Daniel, president of UT Dallas.)
- In August 2011, D. Ford received the Emerald Literati Network 2011 Highly Commended Paper Award for his co-authored paper published in 2010 in Cross Cultural Management: An International Journal.
- In August 2011, O. Richard won a best paper award at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting.
- In July 2011, M. Peng delivered a keynote speech at the Asia Pacific Journal of Management special issue conference at Renmin University, Beijing, China.
- In December 2010, M. Peng won an Asia Pacific Journal of Management Best Paper Award, Asia Academy of Management, Macau.
- On December 17, 2010, UT Dallas News Center reported: “Global strategy prof’s paper is a business pacesetter,” reporting M. Peng’s 2009 AMP paper that was identified as a “New Hot Paper” representing the entire field of Business and Economics by ScienceWatch.
- On November 1, 2010, M. Peng was interviewed by ScienceWatch for his 2009 Academy of Management Perspectives paper (coauthored with three PhD students, S.L. Sun, PhD, 2010; Brian Pinkham, 4th year, 2011-12; Hao Chen, Ph.D., 2011) that was identified as a “New Hot Paper” by citations, because it was cited among the top one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) among all new (less than 2 years old) papers in the entire field of Business and Economics.
- On June 30, 2010, M. Peng was interviewed by Brasil Econômico (Brazil’s major daily economic and finance newspaper) on his global strategy research.
- On June 7, 2010, The Economist reported M. Peng and G. Dess’s forthcoming article in the Academy of Management Learning and Education, “In the spirit of scholarship.” The Economist article is: “Should MBA students care about their professors’ research?” In this article, the UTD Top 100 Business School Rankings are mentioned for the first time by The Economist.
- In April 2010, R. Shah led a student team for the UT Dallas chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) to win a regional SIFE championship.
- On April 26, 2010, UT Dallas News Center reported: “Management profs earn Distinguished Scholar Awards.”
- In March 2010, BOTH G. Dess and M. Peng received the (lifetime) Distinguished Scholar Awards from the Southwestern Academy of Management.
- In December 2009, G. Dess received an honorary doctorate degree at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
- In October 2009, M. Peng delivered a keynote speech at the Pacific Region Forum on “China Goes Global” at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC, Canada.
- In October 2009, M. Peng delivered a keynote speech at the Harvard Conference on “China Goes Global” at Harvard University Kennedy School of Government.
- In August 2009, G. Dess (with G. T. Lumpkin) received the Foundational Paper Award at the Second Annual Idea Awards Banquet for their 1996 Academy of Management Review article.
- In September 2008, our Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, under the leadership of J. Picken, won the 2008 Tech Titans Competition Technology Advocate Award. Sponsored by the Metroplex Technology Business Council (MTBC), Tech Titans is an annual contest that recognizes local advances in technology.
- In 2008, G. Dess was ranked the top 36 most cited management scholar for the period 1981-2004, and M. Peng was ranked the top 65 most cited management scholar for the period 2000-2004, according to a study published in the Journal of Management.
- In 2008, UT Dallas was the 12th highest ranked school worldwide (and the 6th highest ranked in the United States, following Michigan State, Rutgers, Temple, Miami and NYU) in international business research in a study published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Management.
- In 2008, S. Lee and M. Peng (with Y. Yamakawa, a Ph.D. student) won a prestigious U.S. Small Business Administration Award for the best Babson conference paper on entrepreneurship. The paper is posted at the SBA’s government website at http://www.sba.gov/advo/research/rs326tot.pdf.
- In 2008, M. Peng was ranked as the 7th most prolific contributor to the Journal of International Business Studies during 1996-2006. E. Tsang was ranked the 3rd most prolific contributor to Management International Review during 1996-2006, according to a study published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Management.
OSIM faculty members are also active in leadership positions in the field. During 2007-09, M. Peng served as Editor-in-Chief of the Asia Pacific Journal of Management. As the first Editor-in-Chief appointed outside Asia in the 25-year history of the journal, M. Peng managed the doubling of submission numbers and the successful bid to gain entry into the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). APJM’s first citation impact for 2010 was 3.355, which ranked it as the top 18 among 140 management journals. Cuili Qian is currently serving as an associate editor for Journal of Management. Riki Takeuchi is currently serving as an area (associate) editor for Journal of International Business Studies.
In addition to receiving external recognitions, OSIM faculty members are also highly valued at UT Dallas. G. Dess holds the Andrew Cecil Chair in Management. M. Peng is the first holder of the O. P. Jindal Chair and the Provost’s Distinguished Professor of Global Strategy and serves as the executive director of our school’s Center for Global Business. Dr. Joseph Picken Distinguished Chair in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and E. Tsang is the holder of the Dallas World Salute Distinguished Professor in Global Strategy.

Prof. Greg Dess and Prof. Seung Lee’s Strategic Management (co-authored with McNamara and Eisner, currently 9th edition) is widely used throughout the world, with translations in Chinese, Portuguese, and Serbian, as well as a Canadian adaptation and a UK/European adaptation.
Prof. Mike Peng’s Global Strategy (now launching its 3rd edition) is used in over 20 countries, and has been translated into Chinese and Portuguese. Building on the success of Global Strategy, Prof. Peng has also published Global Business (now in its 3rd edition) and a paperback GLOBAL (now in its 2rd edition).
