Work in a team to address a quality-improvement issue at a healthcare or healthcare-related organization.
Lean Six Sigma is a framework used in improving quality by focusing on re-engineering the processes involved in delivering a product or service. The Six Sigma concept was introduced in the mid-1980s to improve manufacturing processes, and it has evolved over many decades. Lean Six Sigma has become popular in the service sector and increasingly has been applied to improve the quality of healthcare processes and reduce the overall cost.
Admission Requirement
Students currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Healthcare Leadership and Management program are eligible but still must formally apply to the Green Belt Certificate Program. Academic certificate programs follow the same application and admission processes as graduate degree programs. All dates and deadlines can be located in the UTD Academic Calendar
All students must complete the required courses with a grade of (B) or higher.
Lean Six Sigma Green Belt in Healthcare Quality:

OPRE 6364 Lean Six Sigma
Please see the current graduate course catalog for course descriptions, course prerequisites and other information.
Required Project
Completion of the OPRE 6364 or HMGT 6332 course does NOT give students a Green Belt Certificate. Students interested in getting a Green Belt certificate must complete a Project . To receive a project students can email their interest to Prof. Kannan Ramanathan (Interested students should send their Net Id, the expected date of graduation, their major area, phone number). The application to work on a project requires the completion of a registration form, AND application through Advising, AND the payment of $2500 (per student) to UTD.
If a project can be found, Prof. Ramanathan will assign a team of three students to work on the project.
Please note that a project takes anywhere from 4-6 months to complete. A project is completed when the customer agrees that students have completed the work that was agreed upon.
Project fees are non-refundable. Paying fees and beginning work on a project is not sufficient to earn a certificate. Quality work is expected. If – in the opinion of Prof. Ramanathan – the student is not contributing to the project, the student will be dropped from the project. The student will not receive the Green Belt Certificate, nor will the project fees be refunded. Students will be expected to work 5 to 10 hours per week per student. This may require frequent visits to the host organization where the project is being carried out.
Please contact Dr. Kannan Ramanathan for more information.
