Volunteering
Every Healthcare Management student should aim to have some experience in the healthcare industry. If you do not have any experience, volunteering is a great way to get involved. We recommend and encourage students to start by looking at hospitals and clinics with volunteer opportunities.
Shadowing
Shadowing is another way to understand the industry. Ask around to see if you know someone who works in healthcare and would let you follow them around at work for a day. If you do not know anyone, call the HR department of companies and ask if they have opportunities for shadowing.
Professional Organizations
Get a student membership to local chapters of professional organizations. We recommend the following. Also, keep an eye out for UT Dallas-sponsored scholarships!
- American College of Healthcare Executives — best for those interested in working in a hospital
- Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society — best for those interested in analytics, informatics or IT. Activate your FREE student membership as a Healthcare Management student at UT Dallas.
- Medical Group Management Association — best for those interested in working at a medical or dental clinic
Internships
The MS Healthcare Leadership & Management does not require, but highly encourages internships, for anyone not already working in the healthcare industry.
Finding Internships
While some internships are posted on company websites, you should not limit your search to them. Ways to be proactive include asking people you met when you volunteered or job-shadowed, pitching your own internship, regularly checking Handshake and reaching out to people you meet at Healthcare Management Association or other events. Reach out to people you met at Healthcare Management Association or other events. There are opportunities out there, but you have to look for them!
When you look in Handshake or others, search “healthcare.” You will often find a filter for clinical versus non-clinical, so check for filter words like “non-clinical,” “business” or “healthcare administration.” “Healthcare Administration” can include things like marketing in healthcare, administration in a doctor’s office or a diagnostics lab. Other keywords to consider are EHR (electronic health records), medical billing, health clinics, nonprofit health organizations, fundraising, assisted living, nursing homes and home health.
Internship Credit
You may choose whether you want to receive course credit for your internship or have it appear on your transcript. If you choose to receive elective credit for your internship or have it appear on your transcript, follow the instructions below.
You will choose how many credit hours you would like your internship to fill. If you are choosing a 3-credit internship, you need to complete 240 hours within one semester and will pay tuition/fees; the 0-credit course has no tuition/fees associated (must complete a minimum of 160 hours).
See the breakdown of credits and hours required below. Please note that all hours must be completed within one semester, and you must be enrolled in the internship class (0-3 credits) during the semester in which you complete the internship.
- 0 credit: 160 hours
- 1 credit: 80-160 hours
- 2 credits: 161-239 hours
- 3 credits: 240 hours and above
Once you receive an internship offer, you must get it approved on Orion before starting the internship. Watch the video on the JSOM Internships page for instructions. You will be required to upload several documents for approval; find out more information under the “Reporting & Timelines” section of the JSOM Internship page.
